wet stone on its lingering finish. They suggest pairing it with curries, Cajun
or Asian cuisine, pork, turkey, white fish and salads. We paired it with a
Caprese salad to start our dinner. It also sips very well on a warm summer
evening on the patio.
SYNCHROMESH RIESLING 2019
Okanagan Falls, B.C. #850115 $23.00
The grapes are from four vineyards: three in Naramata and one in Okanagan
Falls. There is bright lime, tart green apple and wet stone on the nose,
and lemon curd with more green apple on the palate. It has a vibrant,
slightly off-dry finish with a hint of honey and will be terrific with East
Asian dishes (we had it with Vietnamese food). It is available online from
the winery or in private wine stores such as Everything Wine.
TAHBILK VIOGNIER 2019
Victoria, Australia #921817 $21.99
From an older family winery in the Nagambie Lakes in the central Victoria
area (now operated by the fifth generation), this wine has stone fruit including
yellow peach, lemon-lime, wet stone/peach pit, a bit of orange blossom
and ginger spice on the nose. Its crisp, full flavours are of apricot, peach,
honeydew melon, red apple and lemon-lime, with mineral notes, a touch of
spice and zesty acidity on the long finish. It is meant to be consumed young.
It will go with a range of dishes including seafood salad, smoked salmon,
oysters, scallops and prawns, white fish or soft-ripened cheeses.
LAYER CAKE MALBEC 2017
Mendoza, Argentina #675546 $27.99
This is a big, brooding wine. Its aromas are of rich black fruit (cherry and
plum) and dark chocolate, with a dash of vanilla, toasty oak and spice notes.
The flavours are the same cherry and chocolate—like a glass of Black Forest
cake—with some bright raspberry on its full, rich (14.2 per cent alcohol)
palate. You could almost substitute it for port, with dark chocolate, nuts and
fruit after dinner. For a main course, it needs something rich, like BBQ steak
or lambshanks or game. It is drinkable now but has the capacity to age for
at least three to four years.
Next, a local crown-capped bubbly.
