Natalia Bryant was appointed as a member of the New Westminster Police
Board for a term ending June 30, 2020.
Chief Judge Sanders of the South Carolina Court of Appeals noted the following
in his concurring judgment in State v. Hartley, 307 S.C. 239 (1992):
“The experienced investigator ignores motivation. Agatha Christie, and her
ilk, would have us believe that to catch a murderer, the motive must first be
established. In real life, however, unlike on the Orient Express, a known
motive is often beside the point. Ignore the why, the homicide detective
will tell you. Find out the how, and nine times out of ten, it will give you
the who … Unfortunately, this concept goes against the grain. Popular literature,
like that of Agatha Christie, has led us to believe that proof of a motive
is critical. Fortunately, the law of South Carolina has always taken a more

In Midland Funding LLC v. Tagliafferro, 2011 NY Slip Op 21344, the Civil
Court of the City of New York, Richmond County, noted that the plaintiff
had filed the summons and complaint in the proceeding without specific
designation of an attorney. Indeed, “Plaintiff is not even seeking to avail
itself of the device literary utilized by Agatha Christie in ‘And Then There
Were None’ of using the pseudonym ‘U.N. Owen’ for an ‘unknown’ person,
in that story, the host of the weekend party.”
Abigail C.F. Turner was re-elected as a member-at-large of the CBA Health
Law section for a one-year term.
Lindsay J. Bailey was reappointed to the British Columbia Arts Council for
a term ending July 31, 2021.
Columbo is “a somewhat disheveled, but wise detective” who “unravels artfully
conceived murder mysteries”: Hoehling v. Universal City Studios, Inc.,
618 F. 2d 972 (2d Cir. 1980). Dissenting from denial of an en banc hearing in
a case which appeared to limit the duration of questioning during a traffic
stop, Circuit Judge O’Scannlain noted as follows in United States of America
v. Chavez-valenzuela, 281 F.3d 897 (9th Cir. 2002): “in the Nine Western
States, Detective Columbo is now unconstitutional”. The judge helpfully
