THE ADVOCATE 757
VOL. 77 PART 5 SEPTEMBER 2019
When time permits Karen escapes to rural life and is a passable tractor
driver, enthusiastic animal caregiver and willing general labourer. The
arrival of a five-day ice storm coinciding with her return flight from a trip
to Paris was no match for her characteristic ingenuity. Driving down the ice-
covered, silent and dark country driveway, Karen remained unfazed and
once a flashlight was located came up with a realistic plan of action. Her
inherent ability to figure things out, frequently without the benefit of diagrams
or manuals (which drives her engineer brother crazy with envy), has
consistently stood her in good stead even when performing emergency
plumbing repairs (without duct tape).
Karen would undoubtedly say that what matters most to court participants
is a judge’s integrity, impartiality and wisdom. Courtesy, tolerance
and thoughtfulness are intrinsic to Karen’s nature and she has the intellectual
curiosity to learn new areas of the law. Having consistently chosen the
correct path over the easy one, she will rely on inner strength and common
sense as she charts this new course.
The Honourable Mr. Justice Andrew Tam
Andrew Tam casually spiralled down into the underground
lot beside his law office, as he had done hundreds
of times after work. Two levels below, the Dolphin waited
in the darkness.
Andrew is a practical man. And when the successful
defence lawyer’s home renovations demanded he
purchase a small truck to haul garbage and fetch
building supplies, he spared all expense on a dingy 1971 Toyota Hilux
pickup. When acquired, the truck’s most refined feature was the eight-inch
dolphin-shaped silver bottle opener wired to its hood as an ornament; the
vehicle’s moniker was seemingly preordained. The Dolphin had provided
somewhat faithful service to Andrew. But this evening, there was a problem.
It was not that someone had broken into the Dolphin as it sat in the deserted
parkade; it was that someone was breaking into the Dolphin. As Andrew
approached the driver’s side window from behind, he saw, rifling through the
interior for valuables, a man. What should Andrew do?
