THE DRY-FARM OR IRRIGATE DEBATE
I recently read a book about winegrowers in Cahors (a region I wrote about
in my last article) entitled Families of the Vine.1 The author, Michael Sanders,
was in Cahors during the 2003 heat wave and witnessed its toll on the vineyards
of the area. That heat wave was so prolonged and intense that thousands
of people died across Europe—12,000 in France alone. This last
