The John Buchan Society was founded in 1979 to perpetuate the memory
of John Buchan, the first Lord Tweedsmuir and Governor General of
Canada from 1935 till his death in office in 1940. It was he who instituted
the Governor General’s Literary Awards, ever known as “the GGs”. While in
office he was honorary president of the Canadian Authors’ Association. He
wrote 45 books by the age of 50. Perhaps his most famous work is The
Thirty-Nine Steps, but he also wrote, among other things, a biography of
Oliver Cromwell and a history of the massacre of Glencoe. He was a Unionist
Member of Parliament for the United Scottish Universities from 1927 to
1935. The John Buchan Society publishes The John Buchan Journal, in existence
since 1980, now in its 15th edition. Membership in the society costs

British Columbia’s 25th lieutenant governor was David See-Chai Lam,
appointed to that office in 1988. Mr. Lam became a member of the Order of
Canada in 1988 as well.
