Master Stuart Cameron

On November 26, 2018, Stuart Cameron was
appointed as a master of the B.C. Supreme Court,
assigned to Vancouver, proof that nice guys don’t
always finish last!
Universally, the staff and members of the B.C.
Supreme Court applauded Stu’s well-deserved
appointment. His new role allows him to continue
serving the public, to the benefit of British Columbians.
As district registrar (appointed January 31, 2011) and later registrar
(appointed June 30, 2014), Stu demonstrated compassion, thoughtfulness
and respect for all who appeared before him. He was able to mediate resolutions
to many of the disputes he was called upon to decide, and counsel
and litigants were grateful for his skill.
As a supportive colleague, Stu willingly provided advice to members of
the court dealing with the thorny issues of costs and references to the registrar.
Most recently, he has been involved in training new appointees to the
court on these issues. His decisions showed clarity of thought, analysis and
writing. During the master’s competition, there was a lineup of members of
the court wishing to provide personal and professional references for Stu.
Stu is a Vancouver boy whose roots run deep in the city’s legal community.
He graduated with a B.A. from UBC in 1977 before moving with Maureen, his
wife of 42 years, to Windsor, Ontario to attend law school. After a short time,
Maureen returned to Vancouver for work and they navigated a long-distance
relationship during the school year. Maureen supported Stu financially and
emotionally during his years at Windsor in a way that foretold of a lifetime of
