THE ADVOCATE 635
VOL. 77 PART 4 JULY 2019
May 29, 2019 was proclaimed Day of the Honey Bee. Surely they deserve
Speaking of bees, there are over 700 beehives on the roofs of public buildings
in Paris: the Quai d’Orsay, the Opera, the Élysée Palace and many others,
including Notre-Dame de Paris. That cathedral is home to three
beehives. It was claimed that they housed 180,000 bees, 60,000 in each hive.
We wonder about that. 60,000 bees is about the absolute maximum number
of bees a hive will be able to sustain. After that it will become overpopulated
and a swarm will occur, reducing the population to a sustainable level. In
any event, Radio France reports that all three hives survived the recent fire.
Smoke is used by beekeepers to calm a hive of bees before entering the hive
for inspection or to extract honey. It is thought that the smoke from the fire
had a calming effect on these bees and helped to save them.

The Supreme Court of India has issued repeated decisions in a case regarding
air quality in the National Capital Region worsened by fireworks or firecrackers
during Diwali. In its decision of October 2018, it summarized that
“though burning of crackers during Diwali is not the only reason for worsening
air quality, at the same time, it definitely contributes to air pollution
in a significant way”. The court identified other health hazards posed by
fireworks, including noise pollution with “acute psychological, mental and
even physical effect on animals”. The court restricted manufacture and
sale to certain eco-friendly types (noting that “there have been lots of efforts
for production of firecrackers which do not contain harmful chemicals and
thereby not causing air pollution”) and restricted the hours during which
fireworks displays could occur (“on Diwali days or on any other festivals
like Gurpurab etc., when such fireworks generally take place, it would
strictly be from 8:00 p.m. till 10:00 p.m. only. On Christmas eve and New
Year eve, when such fireworks start around midnight, i.e. 12:00 a.m., it
would be from 11:55 p.m. till 12:30 a.m. only”).
The Remington Arms Company is the oldest arms manufacturer in the
United States. It is now in bankruptcy. This is not because it ran out of customers
or ran into business difficulties; the year before it went bankrupt it
made a profit of $191 million. What happened was that it was purchased by
a hedge fund, which, over the years, loaded it down with debt until it could
no longer function financially. It is now owned by the banks to whom it
owes more money than it can generate.
