608 THE ADVOCATE
VOL. 77 PART 4 JULY 2019
Alan’s wife of 65 years, Sheila, died in 2011 at Shawnigan Lake. Alan is
survived by his three children (Douglas, Linda and Kerry) and by six grandchildren
and ten great-grandchildren. Recently he was asked by one of his
grandchildren how long he had been married and he answered, “73 years”,
thus taking his romance through to 2018. Alan had met Sheila at Oak Bay
High School and they were married on December 11, 1945, aged 21 and 19
respectively. Alan frequently recalled on anniversaries that this was the
longest night and shortest day of the year.
In the two decades following his retirement, Alan lived full-time at the
family property at Shawnigan Lake, and there he read voraciously and followed
sports and political events closely. Since 1928, five generations of
Macfarlanes have enjoyed that retreat and for Alan the utmost joy was to be
surrounded there by family, especially during the summers, and for Christmas,
Thanksgiving and Easter celebrations.
