THE ADVOCATE 153
VOL. 77 PART 1 JANUARY 2019
Ringo Starr cancelled a concert in North Carolina in 2014 over a law that, as
noted in his press release, “opens the door to discrimination everywhere by
limiting anti-discrimination laws against people based on their sexual orientation
or gender identity … As Canned Heat sang, ‘Let’s work together.’
And The Beatles said, ‘All you need is love.’” If we’d been Starr’s press agent
we would have mentioned “Jojo” from the 1969 Beatles song “Get Back” who
“thought she was a woman, but she was another man.”
“Would the congregation please note that the bowl at the back of the church
labeled ‘for the sick’ is for monetary donations only.”—Churchtown Parish
Advertised as a “great gift for lawyers/law students” is a print saying “All
you need is love and a good attorney”.
Brenda M. Leong was reappointed as chair and chief executive officer of
the B.C. Securities Commission until December 23, 2023. Nigel Cave was
reappointed as a member and designated as vice-chair of the commission
for a term ending December 31, 2021.
According to the 2016 census, the total number of persons, aged 15 and over,
not living in a couple in Canada was 12,418,440 (including never-married,
divorced, separated and widowed persons).
The first wedding of Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor occurred in Montreal
in 1964. Burton was appearing as Hamlet in Toronto at the time but,
given their complicated histories, the couple apparently had greater success
making arrangements in Quebec.
Sometimes family court files have a happy ending. In Sandomirsky v. Attallah,
2018 ONSC 5012, the parties believed they were married after obtaining
a marriage licence. Unbeknownst to them, the person who performed the
marriage ceremony was not authorized to do so. After discovering this problem,
they applied to the Ontario Supreme Court for an order deeming their
marriage to be valid. The court granted this relief, stating that the parties
“are hereby ordered to live happy together forever” and that the “Court shall
prepare Order on an expedited basis”.
Gloria A. Morgan was appointed as a director of the Southern Interior
Development Initiative Trust until August 27, 2021.
