criminal law in the early years, family law, wills and estates and employment
law. She was director’s counsel for the Ministry of Children and Family
Development for many years, a role she found to be very rewarding. In
addition to her own work, Kristen was always available to assist junior
lawyers whether or not they were in her firm.
Kristen and her husband Dave met in Chilliwack and became engaged
three months later. They were married on July 24, 1993, the day after she
finished her final PLTC examination. They have two daughters, Mairin and
Meagan. Dealing with the demands of being a lawyer and raising a family
is difficult, but it is something that Kristen has always gotten right. Mairin
is following in her mother’s footsteps and is currently attending the University
of Victoria. Megan is in grade 10 at Chilliwack Secondary School. Both
of them, when not in school, have spent time working at the office with
their mother. Mairin and Megan are two young women who have not had
to look far to find a female role model. Dave played for the Pioneers at the
University of Denver and is still an avid hockey player. Kristen can often be
heard complaining about the cost of Dave’s high-end skates and custom
hockey sticks. Kristen is very close with her family. Her parents live just
across the street and her father and her husband have been known to get
into all sorts of misadventures.
Kristen loves reading, eating out, gardening, making jewellery, a good
cup of coffee and travelling around the world with family and friends. However,
that travel has not involved, and will never involve, camping of any
sort. Kristen looks forward to the FIFA World Cup every four years. I have
also seen her enjoy karaoke, although it was somewhat less enjoyable for
the rest of us. Kristen started taking karate with her daughters and eventually
obtained her black belt. She has been involved in various community
organizations and activities including being a member, and past president,
of the Mt. Cheam Rotary Club. Within Rotary she was involved in many
causes including Meals on Wheels and the Chilliwack Children’s Foundation.
Dave and Kristen have billeted several junior hockey players. Kristen
also assisted for many years with mock trials for local high school classes,
often as a judge, something that should help prepare her for her appointment
to the bench.
All who have worked for Kristen could not be happier for her or prouder
of her appointment to the bench. Kristen is hardworking, fair-minded and
dedicated to her work. She will make an excellent judge.
