and bottled unfined and unfiltered, this wine is lush and soft with flavours
of dark berry and hints of violet. It still has sufficient structure to age a few
years but is drinking beautifully right now. Only 486 cases were produced
but there is still availability at Everything Wine. Enjoy this wine with
braised lamb shanks.
SANTA EMA GRAN RESERVA SYRAH, VALLE DE LEYDA 2015
Chile Everything Wine or Marquis Wine Cellars $23
This offering is a classic example of a cooler climate Syrah. The vineyard is
influenced by Pacific Ocean breezes and produces expressive fruit balanced
by a bright acidity. The colour is ruby red with tinges of purple. On the
palate, the wine is juicy and fruit forward with flavours of dark cherry and
a distinct note of violets on the finish. We would recommend pairing this
wine with veal saltimbocca.
NICHOL VINEYARD OLD VINES SYRAH 2015
B.C. – Naramata Bench Marquis Wine Cellars $35
This wine is made from vines that are almost 30 years old. There is a lot of
blackberry fruit on display in this wine, with hints of licorice and the characteristic
black pepper notes that one finds in Syrah-based wines. This wine
is still young and will benefit from a few years of cellaring. It is a good
example of the quality of the Syrah that is coming out of British Columbia.
We drank this with some homemade Italian fennel sausages, but it would
also be brilliant with grilled leg of lamb.
SERAFINO SHIRAZ MCLAREN VALE 2015
Australia Everything Wine $26
The grapes for this wine were grown on the Serafino estate, owned by Serafino
(Steve) Maglieri, an Italian who moved to Australia in his teens in
1964. This Shiraz is medium bodied and does not overwhelm you with its
fruit as many Shiraz wines do. Rather, the plum and dark berry fruit
remains bright and juicy on the mid-palate and into the finish, with fine
tannins providing structure and balance. This wine pairs beautifully with
barbecued ribeye steak.
VANESSA VINEYARDS SYRAH 2014
B.C. Available Online or at the Tasting Room $37
The Similkameen Valley is emerging as B.C.’s next viticultural hot spot, and
the wines from Vanessa demonstrate why. The vines for this lovely Syrah
grow on rows of rocks on a stony, west-facing slope. Winemaker Howard
