THE ADVOCATE 915
VOL. 76 PART 6 NOVEMBER 2018
Arm. Prior to being appointed she was the Administrative Crown Counsel
in Salmon Arm.
As her former colleagues attest, Mariane will bring compassion to her
new role. She has a core of pure moral fibre for pondering the ethical path,
she is a most attentive listener and has a great sense of compassion for
those most in need. Mariane also possesses a quick wit. During conversations,
even on weighty issues, Mariane is known to lighten the mood with
a pun. Like her intellect and compassion, Mariane’s humour derived from
her upbringing. When Mariane was away at university, her father would
send her letters that were littered with puns.
At the centre of Mariane’s world are her two daughters, Emma and Jane.
Emma is in her second year of law school at Queen’s. Jane has completed
her third year in political science at the University of Victoria and has transferred
to education at Vancouver Island University.
Overall, what Mariane brings to the bench is a keen intellect, a diligent
work ethic and a thoughtful, kind nature. Society has gained a judge who
will above all listen to the issues presented in a patient, respectful manner.
Anyone leaving her court, even if their argument did not prevail, will
appreciate her thorough and considered judgment of their case.
The Honourable Madam
Madm Justice Sharon
Justice Sharon Matthews
On February 22, 2018, Sharon Matthews was
appointed a justice of the Supreme Court of British
Columbia. Suffice it to say that our bench will never
be the same. Sharon has left her mark in all her
engagements, personal and professional. She is fearless
and principled, indignant in the face of injustice,
detail-oriented, compassionate, caring, fun-loving,
active, generous and a little bit klutzy. These traits will serve Sharon well in
her new role, with the klutziness serving to reinforce her humanness.
Sharon graced the cover of the Advocate in November 2011 by virtue of her
becoming president of the CBABC.1 She is well known to the bar in this
province and the trajectory of her career is replete with highlights and hon-
