of the Musqueam First Nation, Nina married Andrew (Drew) Court, a former
American serviceman; in April 2018 Keith married Maria Fernanda Villalobos
in Mexico City; in June 2018 Anja become Judge Brown; and the most
recent news is that Nina will be returning to the family home in Bella Bella,
having recently accepted a position as a community health nurse. Whew!
All who know Anja know she brings to the bench all of the personal and
professional attributes and qualities that have served her so well in life, one
so full of energy and rich in experiences.

Geoffrey Bertrand Gomery
The announcement that our former partner, Geoffrey
Bertrand Gomery, Q.C., had been appointed to
the B.C. Supreme Court was bittersweet. For months,
the delays in the appointment process had lulled us
into the wishful and somewhat selfish1 thought that
maybe, just maybe, Geoffrey’s application would fall
between the cracks and we would get to keep an
extraordinary member of the Nathanson, Schachter & Thompson LLP
(“NST”) team and a dear friend. But in our hearts we knew that it would not
be so and that the committee would clearly see that the qualities of an excellent
judge are deeply embedded in his DNA.
Jonathan Sumption, Q.C., now Lord Sumption of the U.K. Supreme
Court, once explained the appeal of being a barrister:
It’s an interesting intellectual exercise debating points of policy with
highly intelligent people under ground rules which prevent you from
evading the issue as one might over a dinner table.
When this quote was relayed to Geoffrey, he grinned his mischievous
grin, but uncharacteristically said nothing. Historical information from the
