906 THE ADVOCATE
VOL. 76 PART 6 NOVEMBER 2018
engaged in the painstaking arrangements for the eventual sponsorship and
support of a Syrian refugee family.
Michelle has embraced her move to the Okanagan and started to participate
in (and organize) social events for the judges. Judge Koturbash has welcomed
his newest colleague to judicial chambers in Penticton, even if he has
to endure her fanatic behaviour during the CFL football season. He noted
that Judge Daneliuk is a “rabid” Edmonton Eskimos fan, which causes him
(and the writers) much consternation. For emphasis, she brought a football
autographed by the Eskimo team into chambers. He welcomed her warm
sense of humour and cheeky yellow sticky notes, particular when two left
shoes went missing from his chambers. On the other hand, he laments that
the court clerks just learned how to spell Koturbash and now they have to
learn how to pronounce and spell D-A-N-E-L-I-U-K. The lights in the Penticton
chambers glow long after nightfall, as like Judge Koturbash, she works
long hours and extremely hard in order to meet her own high standards.
While the law is her first love (sorry, Bob, but you are a close second!),
some have said that Michelle’s true passion is gourmet cooking and exploring
fine wines. She spends hours investigating and searching for ingredients
across different cities. She loves to travel and regularly takes culinary
courses in remote corners of the world.
On that note, Michelle is a sublime chef. Invited guests receive a fully
plated multi-course meal complete with wine pairings. As a good friend put
it: “It was almost divine intervention that Michelle would be appointed to
the bench in wine country!” She does not subscribe to excess. Her interest
in food and wine is both intellectual and epicurean.
Michelle also loves animals and cares about their welfare. Another love
of her life was her wonderfully hairy and large Leonberger dog, Jackson,
who used to weigh in at a cool 225 lbs. She has been known to liberate spiders
from the inside of the house. Her brother put it best: “There is not an
animal out there that she does not love—even the yucky ones.”
Having said all of that, Michelle does have her shortcomings. Some
friends have remarked that she will never find herself competing in the
Tour de France (who would at our age?!) and is a duffer at golf, according to
a good friend who shall remain nameless but who resides on a particular
Gulf Island. She refuses to be swayed by her peers to stop working and take
some time away from drafting decisions or less interesting conference sessions.
She is a bit obsessed with the law.
Michelle will now be required to travel a fair bit as part of her new judicial
role. This is nothing new for her. She will have her bags packed and will
be ready at a moment’s notice. And she will be all in—Judge Daneliuk
knows no other way!
