THE ADVOCATE 435
VOL. 76 PART 3 MAY 2018
Two of our third-year student who will be graduating in June have had a
remarkable year. Karen Perry and Madison Steenson submitted a conference
abstract last summer seeking an invitation to deliver a paper that they
were jointly preparing as part of a directed research project under the
supervision of Professor Jon Heshka in Sports Law. Their proposal was
accepted and they were invited to present their paper at the annual “Play
the Game” conference that attracts lawyers, academics and senior members
of sports bodies such as FIFA, the US Anti-Doping Agency and the International
Olympic Committee. The faculty was able to assist by covering their
conference registration fees and a small travel grant. Our colleague, Professor
Ryan Gauthier, also spoke at the conference, on “Stadium Financing as
a Good Governance Problem”.
The story gets even better: their research paper has now been accepted
by the Harvard Journal of Sports and Entertainment Law and will appear in
volume 10, issue 1. The acceptance letter said, “Our submissions committee
unanimously enjoyed your piece, and we firmly believe it adds significant
value to the field.” I am truly very proud of their achievement. Ms. Perry
was also one of our inaugural competitors in the Jessup Moot.
While I have singled out these two students for their stellar achievements,
I am pleased to say that they have lots of company among our
remarkable J.D. students and alumni.
