Construction of the Berlin Wall began on August 13, 1961 and came as a surprise
to the Berliners. From that date until November 9, 1989, the wall
divided East and West Berlin and was, among other things, a symbol of the
political chasm between liberal democracies and communist regimes. The
wall stood for 10,316 days. February 5, 2018 quietly marked a notable
anniversary: the Berlin Wall has now been down longer than it was up. It is
estimated that over 140 people were killed while trying to scale the Berlin
Wall to escape to the West.
