In related news, The Rt. Hon. Richard R. Wagner was named the 18th Chief
Justice of Canada on December 12, 2017. Originally from Montreal, Justice
Wagner was named a justice of the Supreme Court of Canada on October 2,
2012. If he has a bell on his bicycle would we call it Wagner‘s Ring Cycle?
The Beatles’ “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” was released in 1967. Contrary
to popular myth, the song was not about LSD but was based on a drawing
by John Lennon’s four-year-old son, Julian, who drew a picture of his
school friend, Lucy, in the sky, with diamonds. The song’s title inspired the
naming of the 3.2-million-year-old skeletal frame of a female Australopithecus
afarensis (“southern ape from afar”) discovered in Ethiopia in 1974, as
the song was playing on a nearby radio during the archaeological find. The
assembly of bones is also known as Dinkinesh, which means “you are marvelous”
in the Amharic language.
Lance S.G. Finch, Q.C., Wally Oppal, Q.C., and Joseph Arvay, O.C., Q.C.,
were all recently (and deservedly) awarded the Order of British Columbia.
Established in April 1989, the Order of British Columbia recognizes individuals
who have served with the greatest distinction and excelled in a field
of endeavour benefiting the people of the province or elsewhere. The Order
is the highest form of recognition the province can extend to one of its

On a motion to dismiss a case that “hinged on which films should and
should not be included in DVD and Blu-ray box-sets of ‘all’ James Bond
films”, the judge concluded by noting that “although Diamonds Are Forever,
if Plaintiff wishes to amend her Complaint as directed above, she only
has fourteen (14) days from the date of this Order”: Johnson v. Metro-

Jasvinder S. (Bill) Basran was appointed a justice of the Supreme Court of
British Columbia on January 19, 2018. He was formerly regional director
general and senior general counsel with the Department of Justice Canada.
He replaces Justice Barbara Fisher, who was appointed to the Court of
Appeal in September 2017.
On December 8, 2017 the Law Society of British Columbia presented the
Law Society Diversity and Inclusion Award to Jennifer Chow, Q.C., the
