We often struggle to understand our southern neighbours’ abiding passion
for guns and conspiracy theories. However, perhaps there is both sanity and
a resolve to do something about it among many. In encouraging news, The
New York Times and other news agencies report that several groups of parents
and first responders associated with the atrocious Sandy Hook Elementary
School shooting in 2012 recently commenced defamation claims
against a broadcaster and “an online conspiracy theorist”, Alex Jones, who
steadfastly publishes content that the entire tragedy was a hoax and a conspiracy.
The claimants assert that Mr. Jones “persistently perpetuated a
monstrous, unspeakable lie: that the Sandy Hook shooting was staged, and
that the families who lost loved ones that day are actors who faked their relatives’
deaths.” We wish them well in this matter and look forward to a result
that may help to tame the wilderness of Internet “news” reporting.
