580 THE ADVOCATE
VOL. 76 PART 4 JULY 2018
On January 3, 2017 Audra, concerned over Clint’s recent fatigue and
weight loss, took Clint to a doctor, who confirmed a few months later her
fears of the return of the cancer, now in Clint’s bladder. Clint and Audra
maintained their long-held trip plans to take Lauren and Alex to Jamaica in
March 2017, in early celebration of Clint’s upcoming 60th birthday, and
after almost 18 years together in a flat south of downtown Calgary, moved
to a large suburban home, where family and friends celebrated Clint’s 60th
birthday in July, though his prognosis by then was guarded.
He was hospitalized for much of the fall, as he formally retired and
wound up his practice. In October Clint managed to surprise Audra with a
marriage proposal, a two-carat diamond ring and plans to wed, with a reception
at the Palliser Hotel set for January 5, 2018. Unfortunately, Clint’s condition
deteriorated and in early December he returned to his new house in
palliative care. Justice Hall presided over their wedding, brought forward to
December 21 and held at their home, with Audra, at Clint’s request, wearing
a beautiful white wedding gown.
Clinton William Ford died on December 29, 2017, at 7:17 p.m., in Audra
Rawlinson-Ford’s arms. A reception, now memorial, at the Palliser Hotel
went ahead as planned on January 5, 2018, though in the large main ballroom,
and later upstairs in the ornate Alberta room, the traditional location
for sometimes-raucous Fenerty Christmas parties years ago. Attendees
from the legal and judicial community, family, friends and former clients
spilled out into the foyers as Clint’s life was remembered, with fine scotch
and laughter. Clint’s spirit seemed near, and one could picture him in a
Hawaiian shirt and boat shoes without socks, smiling and laughing, though
outraged that he could not be present.
Smart lad, to slip betimes away
From fields where glory does not stay,
And early though the laurel grows
It withers quicker than the rose.
