58 THE ADVOCATE
VOL. 76 PART 1 JANUARY 2018
CIMS DEL MONTSANT 2012
DO Montsant, Spain #613448 $14.99
From Cellers Baronia del Montsant in Siurana Valley in Spain, a blend of
twenty-six per cent Garnacha (Grenache) and seventy-four per cent Carignan
aged five months in oak barrels. Dark reddish-purple with slight brickred
notes. Nose of bright red currant, raspberry and pencil shavings. The
palate is tart bright-red berries (raspberry, currant and cranberry) with red
cherry, with light smoky oak and herbal notes, a bit of bitter chocolate and
a medium-long finish. A good steak wine that will also pair well with ribs or
beef brisket. Wine Spectator gave it 90 points. Like most lighter-style pinots,
it works well with roast chicken or salmon or pork, and cheese plates.
HÉCULA MONASTRELL 2014
DOC Yecla, Spain #583690 $14.99
From the Bodegas Castaño winery, this wine is unfiltered and had brief oak
contact. It is from 60–80 year-old dry-farmed vines in limestone soils. The
colour is dark purple and it has a nose of black currant, cherry and vanilla,
a bit of fresh tobacco leaf and a streak of wet stone/mineral. The flavours
are sweet black cherry, plum, cigar box and dark chocolate with a long finish.
With a consistent 90 plus points over the years with Wine Advocate and
with a 91-point rating by Robert Parker, it is a real bargain and would go well
with a tomato-based pasta dish or with tapas.
ROAD 13 5TH ELEMENT 2013
BC VQA Okanagan Valley #045922 $49.00 (approx.)
This is a huge wine in every way from its 15.5 per cent alcohol level through
its aromas and flavours. A blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Cabernet
Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Malbec, it has aromas of black plum, raspberry,
cherry, all mixed with smoky oak, a bit of cedar and sage and hints of
vanilla. The flavours are like a black forest cake with black fruit, especially
plum and rich cherry and chocolate and vanilla on a long ripe finish. This
is a great steak wine, with peppercorn or Gorgonzola sauce. It is available
from the winery, online or in private wine and liquor stores.
CHÂTEAU LA BESAGE GRAND CUVÉE 2015
AC Bergerac, France #271023 $18.99
A Bordeaux-style blend of Merlot and Cabernet, this one is an intense dark
hue, with a nose of plum, blackberry, black currant and cherry, and a bit of
green herbs and tobacco. It tastes of the same black fruit, mixed with
vanilla, coffee and some oaky-smoky overtones. It has a long, tart finish.
The winery recommends red meat, fowl or cheese. Steak or burgers with
mushrooms on the BBQ is another great idea.
