CHÂTEAU DE LA GRAVELLE MUSCADET SÈVRE ET MAINE SUR LIE 2015
AC Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Protégée, France #411066 $15.99
The quiet aromas are of white stone fruit, especially peach, lemon-lime citrus,
all wrapped with mineral notes, and the flavours on the slightly effervescent
palate are white peach, green apple, lime and the same flinty stone.
It has a smooth “leesy” finis (after all, it is sur lie). Again, have it with Chinese
seafood or chicken dishes, or milder Indian food.
ÜBER RIESLING KABINETT 2014
QmP Pfalz, Germany #498931 $15.49
We may not have Über to get us around in B.C., but we have it to drink! This
bargain Riesling is aptly rated as a “killer value” at the 2016 Vancouver Magazine
Wine Awards. At only 9.5 per cent alcohol it is a good accompaniment
to a weekend lunch. Slightly off-dry, it has clean aromas of lemon-lime, tart
green apple, some wet stone and lanolin. The flavours are citrus and kiwi,
a bit of honey, the same streak of minerality and it has a racy if slightly sour
acidic backbone. Riesling is a great pairing with Thai, Korean or Japanese
food or sharp cheese. Pad Thai would be perfect.
GALIL MOUNTAIN VIOGNIER 2016
Upper Galilee, Israel #127027 $16.99
This is a kosher wine. On the nose are apricot and white peach, lemon-lime,
wet stone and a touch of oak. On the full palate it displays lifted lemon-lime,
orange peel, nectarine, a bit of oak and vanilla on a tart, lifted finish. Try it
with grilled chicken and mushrooms, lemon veal or Indian food.
CHEVALIER DE DYONIS PINOT NOIR 2015
IG Dealurile Munteniei, Romania $16.50
From the hill country of southern Romania (which the winemaker says has
a climate akin to Burgundy), this lightweight Pinot Noir, made in steel
tanks, is streaked with bright berry fruit (red currant, raspberry and a bit of
wild strawberry) and some light cherry on both the nose and palate, with
notes of black tea and graphite. It has a tart, lifted finish. Available at a reasonable
price, it is a good mid-week wine and would pair well with roast
chicken or salmon or a mushroom dish such as risotto or strong cheeses. At
private wine stores only (we got it at Firefly).
