CLEBC would like to express the greatest gratitude for all that Chief Justice
McLachlin has done for our country as a judicial leader, and also for
everything that she has contributed to the continuing education of B.C.’s
lawyers as a CLEBC volunteer, author and presenter. We wish her all the
best in her retirement.
CLEBC’s second Indigenous Legal Orders and the Common Law conference
is planned for early 2018. For more information, please contact Teresa
Sheward, program lawyer, at <firstname.lastname@example.org>.
CLEBC RESPONDS TO TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION COMMISSION OF
CANADA CALLS TO ACTION
In 2015 the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (“TRC”)
released 94 calls to action in order to redress the legacy of Indian Residential
Schools and advance the process of Canadian reconciliation.
CLEBC identified call to action number 27 as directly relating to our
27. We call upon the Federation of Law Societies of Canada to ensure that
lawyers receive appropriate cultural competency training, which
includes the history and legacy of residential schools, the United Nations
Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, Treaties and Aboriginal
rights, Indigenous law, and Aboriginal–Crown relations. This will require
skills-based training in intercultural competency, conflict resolution,
human rights, and anti-racism.
In support of this call to action, CLEBC’s board of directors has struck a
TRC Task Force to recommend to the board a strategy, plan, goals and priorities
for CLEBC to address the call to action with regard to legal education.
CLEBC recognizes that cultural competency is an integral component of
legal competence for B.C. lawyers. As a continuing legal education provider,
we look forward to working proactively to include cultural competency,
diversity and intercultural understanding in our legal education offerings
and creating a CLEBC Reconciliation Action Plan based on the TRC’s work.
