854 THE ADVOCATE VOL. 75 PART 6 NOVEMBER 2017 To whom it may concern: My name is withheld and I am a practicing member of the Law Society of British Columbia. I wish to request a cancellation of my subscription to the Advocate due to the editorial decision-making in the past two issues that I do not wish to be supporting in any manner. Specifically, your editorial takes in defence of “The Hanging Judge” Begbie are repulsive. Reducing the historical fact that he ordered the killing of many Indigenous peoples (not just Tsilhqot’in warriors) as “but a single dimension” of his otherwise glowing legacy of introducing the English common law to British Columbia (also violent towards Indigenous peoples, by the way) is not thinking that I wish to ever subscribe to. That you also seem to think the legal profession’s past embracement and celebration of Begbie is somehow indicative of his moral character demonstrates your lack of self-awareness of the professions’ own complicity in perpetuating historical and ongoing wrongs against Indigenous peoples—something highlighted by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (should you care to ever read its Final Report) and at the heart of their Call to Action for law societies to provide “skills-based training in intercultural competency, conflict resolution, human rights, and anti-racism.” Please do not send me any issues of your publication or solicit any for subscription from me in the future. name withheld Associate At the time, we sent the following response: I am really sorry to read this response. My preference would be to have you write a piece in response to the editorial so that our readers could hear your perspective. After all, the Advocate provides a platform for all lawyers to share their views. If you’d like to discuss the matter, I can be reached at 604-696-6120. I would prefer to turn this into an opportunity for dialogue rather than a shutting down of communication. I believe that is a better route to reconciliation. I don’t believe that receiving a publication means that you have to agree with an editorial opinion. Sincerely, Michael Bain Editor
