The flavours pick up much of the same with tobacco, ash and a bit of Christmas cake spice on the full and slightly sweet finish. This hefty wine will complement steak or prime rib. PATA NEGRA RIOJA RESERVE 2012 DOC Rioja, Spain #613752 $19.99 The great thing about Spanish wines is that you can readily find one that has been around a bit and yet is still affordable and in great shape! This is a blend of Tempranillo, Graciano, Mazuelo (Carignan) and Garnacha (Grenache). A deep burgundy colour, it has cassis (red currant), raspberry and sour cherry aromas with vanilla and a bit of toasty oak and spice. The tart flavours are raspberry, red plum and light cherry with a medium amount of tannin, with some Asian five-spice and oak on a smooth medium finish. We had it with an herbed barbecued chicken with lentils and roasted vegetables. It will pair well with sharp cheeses or with a pork tenderloin with a cherry or berry salsa. ENDNOTES 1.
