When we opened this wine we found it to be pleasant but somewhat closed and inhibited, so we decided to put a closure on it, return it to the cellar and try it again the following evening. Wow, were we ever rewarded for that bit of patience. The bouquet had burst open to reveal amazing floral and wild cherry scents. The flavours were multilayered with displays of dark berry fruit and black pepper and a lingering finish that went on and on. This is a hedonistic wine that reminded us a bit of some of the great California Zinfandels. It is available at Liberty Wine Merchants and is one worth searching out even if this vintage is not available. Our tastings were done in late February and early March during colder weather, so we enjoyed this with a hearty cassoulet made with homemade fennel sausages prepared by the amazing 95-year-old charcuterie specialist, Raffaele De Vita (Bruno’s dad). CLOS CIBONNE TIBOUREN CÔTES DE PROVENCE CRU CLASSÉ 2014 $36 at Liberty Wine Merchants This beautiful rosé is made from eighty-five per cent Tibouren and fifteen per cent Grenache. The proprietor of Clos Cibonne, long a lover of the native Tibouren grape, pulled out much of his Mourvèdre vines a number of years ago in favour of Tibouren. The wine is peach in colour and offers aromas of rose petals and strawberry with a slight scent of citrus peel. There is considerable depth and structure to this wine. One tastes predominantly stone fruit but with an underlying minerality that gives the wine a most refreshing quality. This is a great rosé from an excellent producer. It also has a very cool retro label, which assures you that you are drinking old world wine. Drink this wine on a patio with grilled salmon or seafood salad. DOMAINE HOUCHART CÔTES DE PROVENCE 2016 #252338 $17.99 This rosé is generally available at B.C. Liquor Stores and represents good value. It has a pale salmon colour and intense fresh strawberry aromas. It is from the 2016 vintage and so when tasted was only about six months old. Not surprisingly, it was very refreshing and had appealing flavours of red plum. There is nothing complex about this wine but it was a delight to drink and went very well with a charcuterie platter of prosciutto, salami and capicollo. This is the perfect patio sipper. Buy a case and enjoy it over the summer.
