THE ADVOCATE V O L . 7 5 P A R T 3 M A Y 2 0 1 7 331 ENTRE NOUS How much of Canadian identity is wrapped up in not being American? A great deal, we suspect. Living as more than seventy-five per cent of us do within 200 kilometres of the U.S. border, inundated as we are by U.S. culture and dependent as ever on trade between our countries, Canadians have never been closer to and yet more distant from our American cousins. Ever since #45 took the presidential oath of office down south in January 2017, we have been transfixed by the unprecedented scenes that have unfolded. The spectacle started long before we all stood stunned as he won the Republican nomination in mid-2016 and it certainly did not end on election night when we sat, mouths agape, as he secured victory. Since then it has been a seemingly relentless onslaught of unparalleled bluster, ballyhoo and blunder. By now, most of us are lying prone in agony simply waiting for the end to come. We have watched his two namesake towers—in Toronto and Vancouver— confronted by protests on behalf of women, minorities, marginalized people and anyone with a basic sense of decency. It has been frustrating, disappointing and above all, exhausting. Yet amidst the onslaught, there have been the most incredible displays confirming what we still respect and admire about the United States. For example, when #45 executed Executive Order 13769 on January 27 allegedly for the purpose of “Protecting the Nation from Foreign Terrorist Entry into the United States” he immediately suspended the issuance of visas and immigration benefits to nationals of Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen whether or not they had already been vetted, had green cards, or were resident in the U.S. Chaos ensued.
