And here a couple of wines from elsewhere (rose and red) I add as well worth quaffing. HESTER CREEK CABERNET FRANC ROSE 2015 BCVQA Okanagan Valley #776500 $17.99 This is a big alcohol, very rich wine (13.8%). The grapes had 12 hours of maceration on the skins and then a cool ferment at 8–12 degrees Celsius. A deep salmon pink, it opens on the nose with sweet strawberry, rhubarb and watermelon, followed by a full, slightly off-dry palate with a bit of effervescence and a long finish. There is more strawberry, red currant and raspberry and a bit of black pepper on the finish. The winery suggests blue cheese and crackers and olives. I say try a watermelon salad with goat cheese or gazpacho. JOSH CELLARS CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2013 California #850073 $19.99 Cabernet Sauvignon was widely believed to be cross of Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Franc in the 17th century, so adding a Cab seems appropriate. This is a well-made if typically ripe California version made from fruit of the Mendocino, Sonoma, Lake Country and Napa regions. Look for aromas of rich raspberry, red currant and red plum, mixed with vanilla mocha, and flavours of plum, blackberries, dark chocolate and a bit of cedar on the full palate. It has a very soft, approachable finish. Try with a pork tenderloin or lamb chops with rosemary. BARON DI VALFORTE, MONTEPULCIANO D’ABRUZZO 2013 D.O.C. D’Abruzzo, Italy #887430 $18.49 From a family estate going back to the 14th century, it has red currant, red plum, black tea and a bit of spice on the nose and more red plum, raspberry, and red cherry blended with tea leaf, cocoa and a bit of oaky ash on its longlasting and tangy palate. Winescores.ca gives it 90 points. The winery suggests appetizers, braised red meats, pasta and cheese. I suggest charcuterie. ENDNOTES 232 V O L . 7 5 P A R T 2 M A R C H 2 0 1 7 THE ADVOCATE 1.
