soft but crisp finish. It is textbook GW. Again, serve with Asian food, oysters
on the shell or light fish and seafood dishes.
BLOUBERG WHITE WINE (NON-VINTAGE)
Stellenbosch, South Africa #375709 $7.99
This was the only Bocksbeutal bottle I could locate in my local LDB. Composed
of Sauvignon Blanc (sixty per cent), Sémillon (twenty per cent) and
Cape Riesling (twenty per cent) grapes, it hails from the West Cape area of
Stellenbosch. It is advertised as “a fresh, lively white wine” and that is a
pretty accurate description. It is a simple summer patio sipper with a relatively
low alcohol level of 11.5 per cent. The nose has lemon-lime and
Granny Smith apple, followed on the palate with white grapefruit, green
apple, a touch of asparagus and mineral. It has a clean if slightly bitter finish.
Still, even to be drinkable at this price is a bargain! Serve with pasta primavera
with pesto, or a vegetable stir-fry perhaps.
WILLIAM HILL ESTATE CHARDONNAY 2015
North Coast, CA #417626 $18.79
Bottled Burgundy style, and from the Healdsburg area, this textbook example
of the new, more nuanced California Chardonnay offers aromas and flavors
of ripe apple mixed with tropical and citrus fruit, baking spices and
vanilla. The fruit is from Sonoma, Solano and Mendocino. The palate in particular
displays a light toastedness over ripe melon, apple and pineapple,
blended with a touch of vanilla. It has a pleasing acidity and a creamy
mouthfeel on the finish. This wine would go well alongside a rich seafood
or salmon dish; it could also be sipped while nibbling a rich cheese and
DOMAINE HOUCHART ROSÉ 2016
A.C. Provence, France #252338 $17.99
Snugly encased in a Mae West bottle, this is an aromatic and well-priced
example of the Provençal wine that is featured each spring in our friendly
neighbourhood LDB stores. A dark salmon hue, it opens with intense aromas
of strawberry and red currant, peach and brambly notes, followed with
flavours of berries and peach on a crisp palate and a slightly peppery finish.
It is full flavoured and well structured, and will pair with a wide variety of
foods, including salmon (fresh or smoked), poultry and pork. For summer
I suggest a charcuterie plate including smoked meats and cheeses.
