she will attain this objective.
The actual trial, which technically is about who should be appointed
guardian of Matteo, is such that today it would not get past the opening witness
without a Charter challenge.
The entire trilogy is well worth the time spent reading it. As with all good
historical fiction, it is not just entertaining, but also instructive, of life in
Venice and Constantinople and as a social memoir of life for Jews in the
