arm. The x-ray displaying the close to 12 pins was pasted prominently in his
office for the rest of his life. His only regret was that he had not caught up
to Mark so he could have seen the crash.
In his working life Chuck gave back to the profession in many ways. He
was head of both the B.C. and the national labour and employment law sections
for the CBA. He co-chaired and presented so many papers at various
CLEs and conferences that Fasken Martineau DuMoulin records have simply
lost count. He never really talked about these accomplishments; he just
did them and carried on with his very full life. He was a mentor to an entire
generation of younger labour lawyers.
At the celebration of life ceremony for Chuck on February 3, 2017, which
was well attended by the entire labour bar, Chuck’s daughter, Paige, told a
remarkable story. In 2001, when Chuck was diagnosed with melanoma and
was awaiting his test results, he heard a story about a man who had a jar of
marbles that represented the anticipated number of weekends left in his
life. After every weekend he would remove a marble and reflect back on
whether he had done something truly useful and fulfilling with that weekend.
The story resonated with Chuck and he decided to spend each of his
marbles wisely. That very weekend, Chuck took Paige on an epic three-day
alpine adventure, and it was the start of a new tradition of having an outdoor
outing every single weekend. Hikes, bike rides, ski trips—Chuck did
not waste a week. As Paige pointed out, Chuck had used 834 marbles before
the sudden recurrence of melanoma claimed his life.
Some lawyers are described, and often not as a compliment, as a “force of
nature”. When reflecting on Chuck’s life, he could truly be described as a positive
“force with nature”. Chuck was an exceptional colleague, a wonderful
lawyer and a tremendous family man with a great sense of humour and zest
for life. His life was instructive to all of us in finding success and balance.
