THE ADVOCATE V O L . 7 5 P A R T 1 J A N U A R Y 2 0 1 7 89 Despite the many debates about the primary purpose of legal education, we believe a fulsome law school experience should offer students the best of knowledge in legal thinking, critical analysis, ethical learning and an introduction to practical skills of lawyering. A broad approach to legal education that includes clinical instruction is something that the Allard School of Law has historically recognized. Our strong line-up of clinical programs has included the Innocence Project, the Indigenous Community Legal Clinic, the LSLAP Credit Program, the Criminal Clinic and the Provincial Court Judicial Externship Program. More recently, the International Justice and Human Rights Clinic, the Bobinski Business Law Clinic, RISE Women’s Legal Clinic and an expanded LSLAP Credit Program have been added to our curriculum. These additional programs have had a number of positive impacts including: • assisting in meeting high student demand for clinical programs; • expanding the areas of law covered in clinical experiences; and • providing greater access to justice in the community. With our expanded clinical programming, we are moving closer to the point where every student at Allard Hall has the opportunity to engage in a clinical experience during their three years of law school. We view that clinical experience as an integrated part of our students’ academic program, which will provide them with an opportunity to learn substantive law and understand broader issues in our legal system and society.
